Effect of an outer-rise earthquake on seismic cycle of large interplate earthquakes estimated from an insta- bility model based on friction mechanics

چکیده
A numerical simulation study is conducted to examine the effect of a large outerrise earthquake on seismic cycle of large interplate earthquakes in a subduction zone. A model of 2D uniform elastic half-space is set up to exactly evaluate static elastic interactions. The frictional force acting on a plate interface is assumed to obey a laboratory-derived rateand state-dependent friction law. The simulation result indicates that a large tensional outer-rise earthquake tend to advance the occurrence time and reduce the magnitude of the next interplate earthquake.

Temporal variation of large intraplate earthquakes in coupled subduction zones
The focal mechanisms of intraplate earthquakes within subducting lithosphere are frequently used to infer large-scale stress regimes induced by slab-pull, bending or unbending, and lateral segmentation and undulations of the slab . Numerous studies have further postulated that the intraplate activity is influenced by transitory regional stress regimes such as those associated with interplate th...

[1] The southwestern half of a 500 km long seismic gap in the central Kuril Island arc subduction zone experienced two great earthquakes with extensive preshock and aftershock sequences in late 2006 to early 2007. The nature of seismic coupling in the gap had been uncertain due to the limited historical record of prior large events and the presence of distinctive upper plate, trench and outer r...
متن کاملScaling of small repeating earthquakes explained by interaction of seismic and aseismic slip in a rate and state fault model
[1] Because of short recurrence times and known locations, small repeating earthquakes present a rare predictable opportunity for detailed field observations. They are used to study fault creeping velocities, earthquake nucleation, stress drops, and other aspects of tectonophysics, earthquake mechanics, and seismology. An intriguing observation about repeating earthquakes is their scaling of re...

Assessing seismic hazards involves specifying the likelihood, magnitude and location of earthquakes in a region. Predicting the seismic hazards is the first step in reducing the impact of the damage caused by an earthquake. In this study, to fully utilize all the known parameters which may possibly affect the occurrence of earthquakes (mb ≥ 4.5); a data-driven rule-extraction method called the...

We investigate upper plate stressing during the earthquake cycle in a subduction segment, using three-dimensional (3-D) elastic models to address the effects of strongly heterogeneous coupling along strike of the interplate interface. We show how heterogeneity controls the locations and mechanisms of seismicity in the upper plate. Oblique subduction segments, two from the Aleutians (Andreanof I...
